I heard a comment for one of the scenes for the movie say that sean represents the heart and gerald represents the head each wants different things in life and when they clash about things its usually explosive because as its shown in this scene gerald (the head) wants the subject in question to reach his full potential and push them when they know they can take it but sean ( the heart) just wants the subject to be happy with what theyre doing in life and finding satisfaction and fulfillment with their life this is exactly why this scene is one of my favorites and why this movie is also one of my favorites

I've read the book as i'm sure a lot of you have - "I don't think either one of you are familiar with out problems here" is a great line and tbh i have some sympathy for Mayor Vaughan. At the end of the day you see the reaction in the town meeting when Brody said he was going to close the Beaches "24 hours is like 3 weeks at other times of year". So being realistic, Mayor Vaughan had no proof there was a shark involved and as a politician of a "Summer Town that needs Summer dollars and we depend on the Summer people for our very lives. If you close those beaches we're finished" he had little option but to keep the beaches open and hope for the best
